Malabar Scrub, May 18, 2015

A quick visit to Malabar Scrub to investigate the habitat immediately north of the pond.

Largeflower Mexican clover (Richardia grandiflora, Rubiaceae)
Not native

Found in grass just before entering the sanctuary.
Common in mowed grassy areas.

Starrush whitetop (Rhynchospora colorata, Cyperaceae)
Native

Found in ditch just before entering sanctuary.

Bracts usually fewer than 7; white portion of largest bract usually less than 1 in.
Common in wet ditches.

Axilflower (Mecardonia acuminata subsp. peninsularis, Plantaginaceae)
Native, Florida endemic

Found near path along south end of point (labeled A on map).
Noticed only this one plant.

Pitted stripeseed, piriqueta (Piriqueta cistoides, Turneraceae)
Native

Found near path along south end of point (labeled A on map.
Found several plants.

Native

Noticed only this one plant, but probably many more in area.

Flower head not yet opened.

Found north of pond (labeled C on map).
Several plants found.

Bracts 7 or more, white portion of largest bract usually longer than 1 in.
Many plants found.

Native

Found in damp sand along west edge of pond (labeled B on map)
 Identified by comparing photo with photos from the Plant Atlas.
Plants common along pond edge.

Pink sundew (Drosera capillaris, Droseraceae)
Native

Found in damp sand along west edge of pond (labeled B on map).
Common in this area.

Carolina yelloweyed grass (Xyris caroliniana, Xyridaceae)
Native

Found on north end of pond (labeled C on map).
This is the only white-petaled Xyris; has twisted stem.

Native, Florida endemic

Several plants noticed.

Found on west side of Malabar Woods Blvd (labeled E on map).
Noticed only this one plant.
