Oak toad (Anaxyrus quericicus)

I spotted this tiny toad hopping/crawling through the short grass. From Wikipedia: "It is regarded as the smallest toad in North America." What looks like a piece of grass on its back is actually a light stripe.

Tosohatchee WMA, May 3, 2016

An early morning tour of our favorite spots, hoping that the recent rains had caused some new wildflowers to pop up. Nothing new, but we did find Grasspink growing in an area that had been subjected to a prescribed burn about one month ago. Lots of thistle along side Bee Head Rd. Pickerelweed appeared to be in peak bloom.

Pickerelweed was abundant on this day. It was especially thick in the water-filled depressions in the meadow beneath the power lines.

This widespread iris has recently been designated as Iris savannarum. The species shown here has a slightly hexagonal cross section. One side is concave, the opposite side is convex, and the remaining 4 sides are approximatley flat.
